[pylenet] Run Cross Country and Become Smarter . . .

Yes, it's true: research shows that aerobic activity increases brain size.  Also, the Cross Country team has the highest GPA (and the most fun)!  It's not too late to consider trying out for the Cross Country Team this fall.  If you missed last night's informational on the Championship Whitman and Pyle Cross Country teams, below you can find the details.

Meeting Notes:

First, I want to thank everyone who braved the storm last night to make it to the meeting.  It was, as Trump would say, the largest XC meeting Whitman has ever had!

Coaching Staff:

The Teams are led by Coach Hays and Coach A.

Coach Hays -- Head Track & Field Coach.  Coach Hays, entering his 20th year of coaching, has sent teams to nearly 60 state championships.  He is one of only about 20 high school coaches in the United States with USATF Level III and IAAF Level V certifications (most coaches with these certifications are college coaches or professional coaches).

Coach A -- Associate Head Cross Country Coach.  Coach A enters her 7th year as Whitman's coach and 4th year as Pyle's Coach.  Amassing a record of 21-3 at Pyle (girls 12-0 and boys 9-3), she looks to continue the undefeated streak of the Pyle girls team.  She works with the teams to develop strong core muscles to make them better runners.

Commitment:

Coach Hays started the meeting by saying that XC is a big commitment.  For Whitman, the first day of practice is August 8.  You must be at practice by by August 13 to be eligible to try out.  Practice will be from 8:00 am to 10:00 am each day (excluding Sunday) until the teachers start back to school. At that time we will begin our normal practice times, 2:50 pm to 4:50 pm each weekday and 8:00 am to 10:00 am on Saturdays.  Additionally, the team will travel all over the east coast for meets on weekends.  Practice and meets are mandatory; if your attendance becomes an issue, you will be removed from the team.

For Pyle, you will start practice the second week of school.  Practice is right after school until about 4:10 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Meets are also on these days.  Two of the meets will be run at Whitman, and the other two will be scheduled at a rival middle school.  We will need help carpooling to away meets and will need chaperones to walk the kids up to Whitman. provide snacks, and course marshal for our home meets.

Forms:

This year, MCPS has started online submission for all of the forms needed to participate in High School athletics (more info to follow for middle school).  Parents will submit forms through the myMCPS parent portal using the same password you used this year.  You can find more information in the handouts section.

Run:

How do you prepare for the season?  You run!  We provided a suggested schedule at the meeting for running from now until the season starts (links can be found at the end of the email).  You want to do easy, conversational paced running (not a jog, but a run).  Our goal over the summer is to build the base of our pyramid; the bigger the base, the higher the pyramid.  Run with your friends.  We also shared a running log where you can track your progress and share it with the coaching staff in the fall.  The goal is to become a better runner, and if you run over the summer and throughout the season, you will become better.  We offer a money back guarantee!

Fun:

We work hard, but we also have fun!  We have team dinners.  We play games.  We have Ice Cream runs.  We make tons of friends across all grades and genders.  These will be your best friends for the rest of your life.  Rising Senior Obi Onwuameagbu spoke at the meeting and said, "Running Cross Country was the best decision of my life.  My life is better because I discovered XC"!  Or something like that.
