Dear Rising 9th Grade Parents and Community Members,

I want to take this opportunity to introduce our two new assistant principals at Walt Whitman, Mr. Phillip Yarborough and Ms. Michelle Lipson. I am truly excited about what each of these highly experienced and skilled leaders is going to bring to our administrative team and the students and staff of Whitman. Both of them have jumped right in this summer and are making an immediate impact on our school.

Phillip Yarborough comes to us from Woodson High School in Fairfax County where he served as an assistant principal. He also worked as an assistant principal in the Washington D.C. Public Schools at Harmony Public Charter Schools, and IDEA Public Charter High School. Throughout his career, Mr. Yarborough has worked as a teacher team leader, English teacher, and department chair. Earlier in his career, Mr. Yarborough served as an English/resource teacher at Falls Church High School, along with teaching leadership and sponsoring the SGA. Finally, Mr. Yarborough will be in the MCPS. leadership development program which prepares school-based administrators for the principal ship.

Michelle Lipson comes to Whitman from central office where she most recently supervised Student Online Learning for MCPS. Previously, she served as the director of the National Academy of Information Technology, the National Academy of Finance and the Cisco Network Academy. Ms. Lipson began her teaching career as a middle school mathematics and science teacher. As a classroom teacher she taught a variety of subjects at Herbert Hoover Middle school including mathematics, art and computer applications. At Hoover, she provided leadership as the resource teacher for the arts, physical education, and health education. Ms. Lipson has a passion for the arts, technology, and makerspaces, and was recognized in 2012 as a Microsoft Innovative Educator.

Once again, I know that Mr. Yarborough and Ms. Lipson are going to bring a wealth of expertise and passion to their roles as leaders at Whitman. Most of all, they will dedicate themselves to the success of our students.

Sincerely,

Robert W. Dodd, Ed.D.

Principal
