Dear Walt Whitman High School Community:

The purpose of this letter is to introduce myself and express how honored I am to be appointed principal of Walt Whitman High School, effective July 1, 2018.  I am indeed excited to work with staff, parents, and community members to ensure that we continue to build on Walt Whitman's long and storied tradition of fostering students' academic and personal success.

I also recognize the enduring impact principal Alan Goodwin has had on the Walt Whitman High School community.  When I visited the school prior to my interview, I was fortunate to be able to observe firsthand the care and interest Dr. Goodwin shows toward students, staff, and parents. Subsequently, I feel privileged to be following a principal that has set such a high standard of school leadership and service to a school community.

I was born and raised in Montgomery County and my parents were both educators in MCPS. My wife and I are graduates of Paint Branch High School, and we have two children, Johnny and Nora, who make us immensely happy.  Over the course of my 25-year career, I have been a special education para-educator, classroom teacher, and principal of both Strathmore Elementary and Argyle Middle Schools.  Over the last three years, I have trained over 30 novice principals as a consulting principal in the Office of Human Resources and Development.

I have several core values that will guide my leadership of the Walt Whitman High School community.  First, I believe that relationships are the foundation of our efforts to ensure that students are successful in school.  In addition, educational equity must be a priority if we are to succeed in having all Whitman students excel in school.  Subsequently, it is vital that Whitman is a welcoming and safe place where all students are challenged and supported to do their very best.  Finally, I believe that high school is a time for our students to explore their interests and develop healthy and productive habits of mind.  It is essential that we work together to help students learn how to engage in self-care so they can balance their personal and social interests with their academic responsibilities.

I will be holding my first Meet and Greet in the media center on July 12 the from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Both parents and students are welcome to stop by. I will be holding additional Meet and Greetson July 24th from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the courtyard, and August 1st from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the media center.  Once again, I am profoundly grateful to be the new principal of Walt Whitman.   I look forward to meeting you and your children and working with staff to ensure that all Walt Whitman High School students excel academically and flourish personally.
