Navigating Edline and Google Classroom: Helpful Tips for Parents
Featured Speakers: Resource Counselor Erika Huck,
Math Resource Teacher Andra Metz, and Media Specialist Beth Knafelc
General tips for online educational tools
Teaching students how to use internet and online education tools safely and responsibly is just as important as teaching them to drive a car safely and responsibly
Online homework online can become a distraction; parents should make sure that students are really doing homework and not surfing the internet or being interrupted by social media
For safety's sake, parents should consider keeping computers and laptops in a public space in the home and not allowing the student to access the internet from a private location
Generally speaking: Edline is used for teacher-to-parent communication and posting of grades; Google Classroom is used for day-to-day assignments and teacher-to-student communication
Generally speaking: Humanities classes (English or Social Studies) are more likely than STEM classes (technology, math or science) to use Google Classroom on a day-to-day basis
MCPS blocks students from accessing inappropriate sites (gaming sites, social media, etc.) from school computers
Edline
- used approximately ten years
- parents can have independent login and password
- goal is for all MCPS teachers to use Edline for posting homework assignments and grades; however, the frequency and method of using it can vary greatly depending on the teacher.
- there has been talk of phasing out Edline eventually, but MCPS does not yet have a plan in place for this conversion; it is primarily still supported for the benefit of parents
Google Classroom
- around 2-3 years and most teachers are still learning the system
- much more supportive of curriculum and interactive than Edline; allows students to interface with what they did in class that day; everything done in Google Classroom in class is updated for use at home; facilitates group learning by allowing multiple students to work on same project from home
- allows assignments to be distributed and turned in electronically, thus reducing paper use
- teachers who use Google Classroom exclusively are encouraged to leave notes on Edline referring parents and students to the Google Classroom site
- students have login info but parents can access site via Guardian Function (contact the teacher for access info)
- Combined Calendar feature will show all assignments for each class with dates of when the material was covered and when assignments are due
New Required Quarterly Assessments (RQAs)
- administered in courses that previously had a districtwide, MCPS-written final exam; for Pyle this means algebra, honors geometry, and world languages.
- assessments developed, administered, and standardized across the county
- new assessments are content-specific and highly specialized for each course; unlike final exams, these assessments differ in format, length, and scoring, depending on the specific course or content area
- worth only 10% of the quarterly grade, so usually only affects students with borderline grades
- RQAs for World Languages are in the form of Integrated Performance Assessments and use real-life contexts for assessing student performance; given in three parts over multiple days to assess student's ability to read, speak, and listen in the chosen language
